After a sell-out summer show in 2009, Southbank Centre, Riz MC, British Underground and Ctrl.Alt.Shift present the second UNITED UNDERGROUND event - a music and activism party at Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Blending cutting-edge music, street culture, artwork and film alongside talks and Q&As with cultural and political risk-takers, the night will introduce exceptional new club and alternative artists and explores the potential of music as a catalyst for change, focusing on the issue of conflict.

Events spread out over the Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall auditoria. With more artists and a range of speakers still to be announced, the current line-up already includes:

In The Purcell Room
Live acoustic sets alternating with activists and speakers from across the cultural, social and political spectrum. Talks from former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and prolific Guardian columnist Ben White are confirmed alongside performances from Trembling Bells, Olivia Chaney, Laura Moody, Broadcast2000, Aruba Red and Attaca Pesante.

In The Front Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall
Live music and DJ sets hosted by London’s best underground clubs, such as Wiley’s Eskimo Dance, Urban Nerds, Dirty Canvas, Night Slugs, Chock-A-Block, Speakers Corner and Hit & Run. DJs and MCs include Nolay, Lowkey, P Money, Marvell, Rinse, Envy, Magic, and JJ. Plus an opportunity to create badges and activism materials with the Craftivist Collective - www.craftivist-collective.com.

In The Queen Elizabeth Hall
New short films commissioned by Ctrl.Alt.Shift and shorts and features curated by Mia Bays (Film London /Speakeasy).

Writings On The Wall is the FREE spoken word, music, and interactive art warm-up event for United Underground, open to all from midday-3:30pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, featuring screen printing workshops/showcases led by Print Club London, alongside a live showcase of some of the most exciting unsigned music acts and spoken word artists. Featuring Rhymes Won’t Wait Collective, and Fringe First Winner Inua Ellams and Poejazzi, plus acoustic sets by The Samantha Durnan Band, Pete McAllen and more to be announced.

Go Hard 4 Haiti - This Friday!

Party Like A Rockstar, Donaeo and Ctrl.Alt.Shift presents Go Hard 4 Haiti

Funky house don, Donaeo, and the Godfather of grime, Wiley, headline Go Hard 4 Haiti, a club night donating all proceeds to the emergency appeal for Haiti.

Taking over Club Pure for one night only, Galaxy FM's Steve Sutherland is joined on the decks by one of Ctrl.Alt.Shift ambassadors, 1Xtra's DJ Target. Microphone duties are reserved for Wiley ('Take That'), Bashy ('Black Boys'), Princess Nyah ('Frontline') and Marvell (Double S, Vertex and Shocka).

Date: Friday 12th February 2010
Time: 9pm-3am
Venue: Pure Nightclub, Octagon Parade, High Wycombe HP11 2HU
Minimum donation of £5 on the door.
All proceeds will go to the emergency appeal for Haiti.

Following the success of London's Rave 4 Haiti, that raised over £10,000 and saw over 3,000 people queueing to be a part of a historic clubbing moment, Ctrl.Alt.Shift, the movement for a new generation fighting social and global injustice have joined forces with Donaeo, responsible for club anthems including 'Party Hard' and garage classic 'Bounce', to give non-Londoners a chance to do something for Haiti.

"The reality is not all young people would think to donate money online. I saw what the Rave 4 Haiti did, bringing people together and also allowing everyone - even if they only had a fiver - to do something for the cause." Donaeo explained, from his studio.

"When I saw the disaster I wanted to do something but didn't know what. After performing at the London event myself, I thought maybe I could try and so something myself... When Club Pure rang us about availability, it was as if it was meant to happen, so I rang Chantelle Fiddy, editor of Ctrl.Alt.Shift, the coolest and most pro-active charity movement I'm aware of at the moment, and Go Hard 4 Haiti was born."

About Ctrl.Alt.Shift: Ctrl.Alt.Shift is the experimental youth initiative politicising a new generation of activists for social justice and global change. Using creativity, photography, film, stories, illustrations and music, it aims to give a voice to the silent majority. www.ctrlaltshift.co.uk

Background information on Haiti:
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the 9 million population living under the poverty line. 70% of the population has no formal job, land or tools to survive. An earthquake of this magnitude will seriously affect already impoverished communities which are already vulnerable to damage from frequent natural disasters.

What our partners are doing:
Our partners are sourcing emergency relief items for distribution to more than 15,000 people in eight communities. We are targeting areas that are getting little help from other agencies. Five Haitian partners and our Dominican Republic partners – Solidaridad Fronteriza a DR partner based at the northern border, and the Jesuit Refugee and Migrant Service) hope to provide food, tents, hygiene kits, blankets, jerry cans for water and water purifiers. APROFISA, a specialist healthcare organisation, and will also be providing medical support. As of Saturday, 16th of January 2010, every single one of our partners in the Dominican Republic is assisting in the relief effort in Haiti.

I can honestly say that after watching this man - my favourite composer - play for two and a half hours, I not only wanted to shake his hand but also kiss his feet. I stuck to just shaking his hand and not washing it for a few more hours. Need at least one of his albums in your collection although I think I own everything he's released on CD. Anyway, I ramble...
