True G

Dnikes, originally uploaded by chantelle.

Jarrett you're a true G, thanks, thanks, thanks. Looking freshle in the manor now. No longer will Jammer, Capo & Ratty laugh at my Dunlop whites. According to Danny at RWD it's worse to wear the Dunlops with green. Not that I care too much, after all I've never been a sheep. I was wearing scuba diving suits to school for a laugh and I was bussing leg warmers and skirts over trousers long before it was deemed acceptable. Once again, and what?

I don't know whether this is true or not. I've been receiving a lot of bomb jokes in the last week. It seems it's ok to be racist these days as long as you put 'very wrong' in the subject line. I'm all for laughing in the face of fear but surely there's limits?

I haven't been blogging 'properly' for a number of reasons 1. I've been too busy/too lazy 2. I lost the use of words for a while 3. I needed a break to re-establish my love of grime and all that comes with it, it was getting me down. 4. Sometimes it's better I say nothing than something 5. There's too much I can't tell you.

Smoove No More

On Friday 26th August Smoove, Ministry of Sound’s urban event, will hang up its mic and headphones to make way for a new Friday night format. In its five years governing the urban club circuit, Smoove has become one of the most acclaimed, respected and adored urban nights. Launched in November 2000, the night was Ministry of Sound’s first step into the urban arena. Originally hosted by MJ Cole and Matt White, Smoove fast became the most popular destination for the then booming UK Garage circuit be it players, producer and party people, and has since become the venue that performers have chosen for showcasing new material as well as hanging out. Masterstepz and Shortee Blitz are the current reigning resident DJ’s, commanding the clubs two main rooms with a heavy rotation of Hip Hop, R&B, Bashment, UK Garage and old Skool. As well as carving a reputation for hosting the finest parties, Smoove now has its own distinct identity and dedicated personnel which has seen the launch of international and national tours, albums, radio shows, a dedicated website, live events and more recently Smoove Records, the brand’s record label that has brought us SLK ‘Hype Hype’ and current signing Jamesy P ‘Nookie’. Whilst the label and international tours will remain, Smoove the original Friday party will not, although dedicated fans can continue to enjoy it on a monthly basis when it will appear on a Sunday. These events will take place on the last Sunday of every month and will be hosted by leading DJ’s and performers from all over the globe.  “We have had five amazing years. When we first launched Smoove back in 2000 we could never have predicted its success.  It has been one of Ministry of Sound’s greatest achievements but we do feel that it’s time for a change of direction. We will still host huge monthly parties and continue to spread the Smoove experience across the globe, whilst introducing a fresh and upfront slant to Fridays” - Laurence Bagnall, Smoove Promoter

On Friday 26th August, Smoove will be hosting ‘The Grand Finale’ that will invite a long list of Smoove players, past and present, to the decks and stage. In the main room will be residents Shortee Blitz and Masterstepz alongside Rampage and various live PA’s still to be confirmed.  The Bar will see the return of original R&B resident Matt White with Chippie, Swerve & Semtex and hosts Klarkie & Skinz. Over in the Baby Box, yesteryear Smoove will be represented via preceding UKG resident Norris Windross alongside Pied Piper, Mikee B, Artful Dodger and MC Ranking.

A farewell party for the urban scene’s most adored club night. It is going to be huge and it is going to be sad but the future is going to be exciting. Smoove would like to say a HUGE thank you to all those who have played a part and shown continued love and support.

London United

Formerly known as the Respect Festival (name perhaps also changed to distance the event from George Galloway?) Saturday, 16 July 2005, 12pm -  8.30pm, Burgess Park, Albany Road, South London SE5. Directions: http://www.london.gov.uk/rise/festival/get-there.jsp FREE. Following the London bombings the RISE anti-racist festival has been renamed LONDON UNITED.  LONDON UNITED will be held tomorrow, Saturday, 16 July, to remember all of those who died in the attacks last Thursday and to show London's defiance of those who try to change the character of the city through terror. The London United gig will give Londoners the chance to come out and show their opposition to terrorism and their love of their city. The Mayor said: 'The bombings that took place last week indiscriminately attacked Londoners irrespective of race, culture, religion or age. London is the future. This free gig will show that London stands firm and celebrates its status as a city of all races, faiths and cultures, the very thing the bombers hate.' 70,000 people flowed through the gates at last year's anti-racist event (then called RESPECT), and even more are likely this year.

Here is the new line-up and running order for the main stage:

Lay Down

wildpoppies, originally uploaded by chantelle.

Light Relief

Roll Deep on Top Of The Pops, 7pm, BBC1 tonight.

And So They Talked

Ben Hecht: Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock.
Thomas Jefferson: The advertisement is the most truthful part of a newspaper.
Edith Sitwell: The public will believe anything, so long as it is not founded on truth.
Abigail Adams: We have too many high sounding words, and too few actions that correspond with them.
Paul Valery: The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be.
Will Durant: Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos
Havelock Ellis: The more rapidly a civilization progresses, the sooner it dies for another to rise in its place.
W. Somerset Maugham: It is not wealth one asks for, but just enough to preserve one's dignity, to work unhampered, to be generous, frank and independent.
Moshe Dayan: If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.
Malcolm X: You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.
Soren Kierkegaard: People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.
Jules de Gaultier: Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality.
Mark Twain: The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.
Sir Winston Churchhill: For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.
Susan Jeffers: We have been taught to believe that negative equals realistic and positive equals unrealistic.
Benjamin Franklin: Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen. Keep in the sunlight.
Joseph Addison: What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

What Can I Say?

_40713325_busbomb238, originally uploaded by chantelle.

It's a horrible day. Mixed emotions. I feel guilty for being sad when I'm ok and so many aren't, I think it's the shock. The sound of emergency vehicles isn't letting up and the phones still aren't working properly.

It's amazing what a difference 10 minutes in your day can make. I was running late so got to Old St just as they were closing station. Despite hearing a bomb had perhaps gone off at Liverpool Street (the helicopters and speeding police seemed to back this up) still got on the bus towards Kings Cross, worrying about being late to work. I've got lanyards to deal with don't you know. Getting stressed about buses being to full. You always think it won't be you don't you?

Just before arriving at the station the driver was alerted to a bus bomb. By this point there were about 30 buses just waiting, not knowing where to go or what was actually going on. One by one engines switched off. Next the glimpses of walking wounded. No phones working. Panic. Sirens.

Until I got into Shoreditch it was a different World. Hundreds of people just wondering around, waiting at bus stops, not knowing... I opened the front door and the relief hit me. Back home it's peaceful and you wouldn't know anything had happened. But it has.

And I don't know what to say. n.b To save confusion note this picture is not from today

The unpublished government funded report shows that gun culture is now rampant in urban schools. Of the 11,000 central London teenagers under 16 who were questioned, one in ten had carried a knife in the past year and one in 16 of boys and girls had carried a gun or replica gun. White boys were more likely to say they had carried a gun than black boys. Many children blamed a growing sense of lawlessness on the need to carry a weapon in self-defence. One in five reported they could get hold of a replica gun.

Where For Art Thou Romeo?

Hot news just in. It had to happen sooner or later but pleased to reveal Crazy Titch's dog Romeo has found love. My source reveals "It was the most animated i've seen him, it seems more than warring with other mc's and spitting bars, Titch likes puppies." There you have it, remember where you heard it first because this is the real deal.

Fumin Gets A Break

Earlier this year, Music Matrix was commissioned by the Arts Council to source the cream of urban talent across the UK. A winning song has been selected by Galaxy DJ and MOBO Award winner, Steve Sutherland, and will now be performed live from Ibiza on Galaxy, the UK’s biggest commercial youth radio network with more then 2.5 million listeners. ‘One Night Stand’ featuring Nana, Fumin and Baby Blue was the track that caught Steve’s ear. It has been produced by Dexplicit who was also behind Lethal B’s "Pow" record which charted at No 13 earlier this year. NaNa was catapulted into the limelight back in 2000 as the featured artist on the Architechs UK top three garage anthem, ‘Body Groove’. The track sold some 500,000 copies and achieved platinum status. Five years on and NaNa (27) is now launching her career as a solo artist. Fumin is a 19-year-old MC from East London and despite being unsigned, has still been attracting the attention of the media with his debut mixtape ‘Freckle Face’ securing coverage in top style and music magazines, including i-D and RWD. Nana, Fumin and Baby Blue will be flown out to Ibiza and will join Steve as he broadcasts live from Plastik, San Antonio on July 31 from 10pm-2am (Ibiza time) as part of the Galaxy in Ibiza weekend. Also on the billing that night will be performances from some of the biggest, established, chart-topping names. www.galaxyfm.co.uk.

About Jammer: Hailing from Leytonstone, East London, producer/MC/hype man Jammer is one of the key figureheads of the grime/garage scene: big tunes include Fire Hydrant and Destruction VIP (featured on the Run The Road compilation). The former N.A.S.T.Y. Crew member (now running his own clique, Jah Mek The World) smashed it in New York earlier this year alongside 17-year-old protege Ears and MC D Double E in one of grime's first forays into North America. Jammer's also worked with godfather of grime Wiley (Roll Deep), Lethal B (More Fire Crew) and Riko Dan and remixed the big man of UK hip hop, Roots Manuva, as well as finding time to launch the successful DVD series Lord of the Mic! His incendiary live performances - some call him the Lil' Jon of grime - have earned him a reputation as the most rewound artist around. Like he says...Neckle! "A brilliant grime pioneer" - The New York Times, "The crowd were obviously loving it, loving it, loving it" - Chantelle Fiddy on Jammer in New York.
