Ludovico Einaudi - Divenire

I can honestly say that after watching this man - my favourite composer - play for two and a half hours, I not only wanted to shake his hand but also kiss his feet. I stuck to just shaking his hand and not washing it for a few more hours. Need at least one of his albums in your collection although I think I own everything he's released on CD. Anyway, I ramble...

SB.TV F64 - Lowkey

Without a doubt a seriously underrated MC. He appeared at the last United Underground and hopefully we'll set him back at Southbank on Feb 20th.

SB.TV F64 - Maveric

Shout out to SB who's currently editing the videos from the rave4Haiti last night. It was overly hype - roadblock from before the doors opened 9pm. I penned this earlier, more to follow...

So here we sit, committing a cardinal sin - eating McDonalds. But give us a break. We've just got in from the rave for Haiti at The Den and not even a double egg selection can save us. Having raved - or in my case worked the door - since 9pm, the fact this is getting written at 7.51am says it all.

While I write this, street team co-ordinator Sian is asleep on the sofa and Mervin has passed out on the chair next to me. It was without a doubt a massive success. According to security they've not seen a crowd like that since the last rave at The End, before it became The Den - before the doors had even opened at 9pm the queue was backing onto Oxford Street. Having reached capacity by 10.30pm we can all but apologise to those who didn't get in and thank those who waited up to three hours to get in and be a part of this event to rave money for Haiti.

We couldn't have done this without you lot and a massive, massive thanks to all the artists who represented for no fee and the volunteers who donned Ctrl.Alt.Shift t-shirts and shook their buckets like true money makers. There's too many of you to mention, but you know who you are.

A full report, images and video footage will follow. We also hope to announce the total raised by Friday along with the raffle winners. As well as the door money and additional funds raised inside, the promoters at China White have told us they'd like to donate their nights takings and The Den are also going to contribute. Then there's the bucket full of coins that need counting. Guess that's Thursday accounted for then.

But let's not forget what this was about - the people of Haiti. Keep giving and check back for details of the auction which will kick off on Monday. We've had some amazing prizes put forward so you'd be an absolute fool not to.

Thanks again.

Rave For Haiti!

I literally can't believe we've pulled this together in a few days. My voice is nearly gone but I need to preserve it in order to join Loose Cannons on Kiss100 tonight, to talk all things Haiti and raving. But the show must go on... And if you'd like to donate something for the raffle or forthcoming auction please contact yumna@ctrlaltshift.co.uk. Thanks so much to everyone supporting and getting involved. The line-up is constantly being updated and we can happily reveal Ace & Invisible (1Xtra) will be hosting and Dynamo The Magician will be there on the night performing his tricks... for a small price of course. Come armed with change or go home alone.

True Tiger & Ctrl.Alt.Shift in Partnership with SOME Night for special charity event in aid of Haiti

Date: Wednesday, 20th January
Price: Minimum donation on the door £5 (suggested donation £10 or more)
Time: 9pm-6am
Location: The Den & Centro, 18 West Central St, London WC1A 1JJ
http://www.thedenandcentro.com/

SOMEnight, London’s premier weekly dance music event is opening its doors and decks to the cream of both the U's urban and dance music scenes in a bid to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Having partnered with Ctrl.Alt.Shift, a charity who use popular culture to take global action, and esteemed production outfit True Tiger, some of the biggest names in the business have agreed to waiver their fee’s to appear at the event, with the confirmed line-up a cross section of the UK’s talent spanning multiple genres.

Stanza, of True Tiger explains: “We’ve literally pulled this together in three days. I got on the phone to Jack, the head of Vagabondz promotions at SOMEnight and Chantelle Fiddy, editor of Ctrl.Alt.Shift, about joining forces. We want to ensure our money gets to those who need it the most and Ctrl.Alt.Shift’s partners on the ground in Haiti will do just that. The response from everyone involved has been amazing and people have donated merchandise and goodies for our raffle on the night so we should be able to make a substantial contribution to the world-wide relief effort.”

Tinchy Stryder, the UKs best selling male artist of 2009 says: "It's so sad and I know everyone who's seen the news has been touched by how many people have lost their lives and being made homeless. I've protested with Ctrl.Alt.Shift before but now, more than ever, it's about playing your part, so whether you can give £5 or £50, be a part of it. Unfortunately I'm in America and can't attend the event but I've donated a load of gear from Star In The Hood which you can win on the night, so do make sure you buy your raffle ticket too."

Wiley, currently in the charts with club anthem 'Take That' adds: "When disasters like this happen it gives you a reality check and if there's something we can do to help then we should all do it. An event like this shows that we're able to come together and make a difference where it matters."

With 2009 being the year than many underground artists and genre’s achieved mainstream chart success there has never been a better reason for one and all to come together, share a great night of music and raise money for a worthy cause.

The event takes place at the infamous 1200 capacity Den & Centro (formally The End) in central London on the 20th January.

Proceeds will go to the Ctrl.Alt.Shift Haiti appeal. Hundreds of thousands of people are already feared dead and many more are believed to be critically injured. Countless are homeless. The five partner groups are are targeting areas that are getting little help from other agencies. They will provide food, tents, hygiene kits, blankets, jerry cans for water, water purifiers and medical support.

Updates on the money raised and how it’s been distributed will be available at www.ctrlaltshift.co.uk/haiti. You can also donate from the website.

New Ctrl.Alt.Shift Magazine Out Now!

So this is without a doubt the biggest - and most exciting - magazine project I've worked on. As an editor, to be given a blank canvas to work from is a rare opportunity and I'm hap-hap-happy with the result. And I believe this is something of a first for the charity sector - a consumer facing title that can sit happily on the shelves along some of the magazine greats. Having upgraded Ctrl.Alt.Shift Magazine, there's now over 80 pages of recycled loveliness for you to digest. The pages are bigger too which means there's more to read. Duh.

We went from this:

To this:

To:

Ctrl.Alt.Shift: The Corruption Issue focuses on corruption as both a key cause of poverty and the barrier to overcoming it, and represents an ongoing attempt by the organisation to bring a marginalised social and political agenda back into mainstream rhetoric.

"We hope the magazine will reach out to people who wouldn’t traditionally be interested in politics or current affairs, and encourage those people out of their comfort zones and into action”. (Katrin Owusu, Head of Youth Marketing and Innovations at Ctrl.Alt.Shift.)

Highlights of the issue include:

•The A-Z: 22 pages of bite-sized chunks, global trends, topics and tit-bits shaking up our world.

•Sarah Maple: The artist described by The Independent on Sunday as ‘the heir to Tracy Emin’s throne’ unveils a bespoke piece of work influenced by corruption and sex.

• Culture club – Richard Shoyemi looks at how Asda’s new Asian range will inspire a generation of fashionistas to swap minge creepers in favour of saris.

• Interview with Tim Westwood – the Radio 1 DJ talks marrying music, activism, and why he wouldn’t take Pimp My Ride to Palestine.

• Ben White: Author of Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner’s Guide, freelance journalist and Middle East expert breaks down the language of corruption.

• Riz Ahmed: fresh from appearing alongside Judi Dench in the movie Rage, the actor and MC finds time to give his take on the effects of corruption.

• Face the Music – Ctrl.Alt.Shift unearths the sounds which are making it big in Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria and beyond.

• Goody Two Shoes: Feature on how Brazilian show company Melissa and designer Vivienne Westwood have met in ethical style heaven.

• Murder he wrote – an investigative feature by Rahul Verma into honour killings in India.

**You also get a bonus picture of me next to the editors letter, I mean what more do you want?**

Printed on completely uncoated paper using vegetable ink, the magazine is completely biodegradable and has a cover price of £3.95. It is available from most WHSmith stores and will be available to buy from www.ctrlaltshift.co.uk soon.

An extra special thanks to Katrin Owusu for giving me the chance to do this, Richard Lemmer for being a journalistic whizz kid, Dwain Lucktung for holding down the website, Emma Ellwood Russell for making sure this happened and getting us into shops and Mark Calderbank for an exceptional design job.
